FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to help students improve their achievement of intended instructional outcomes. Aligned to North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Example Standard IV: Teachers Facilitate Learning For Their Students Teachers use a variety of methods to assess what each student has learned. • Teachers use multiple indicators, including formative and summative assessment to evaluate student progress and growth. • Teachers provide opportunities, methods, feedback, and tools for students to assess themselves and each other. • Teachers use 21st Century assessment systems to inform instruction and demonstrate evidence of students’ 21st Century knowledge, skills, performance, and dispositions.
Formative Assessment Model Process
NC FALCON Modules There are five formative assessment modules in the online professional development series located in NC FALCON. • Importance of Formative Assessment • Learning Targets and Criteria for Success • Collecting and Documenting Evidence • Analyzing Data and Descriptive Feedback • Administrator’sRole in FormativeAssessment
NC FALCON PLCs Each of the five formative assessment modules has an online learning community forum located in NC FALCON. • PLC: Importance of Formative Assessment • PLC: Learning Targets and Criteria for Success • PLC: Collecting and Documenting Evidence • PLC: Analyzing Data and Descriptive Feedback • PLC: Administrator’s Role in Formative Assessment
Best Practices • Each LEA/school has an NC FALCON Coordinator • Each LEA/school has an Implementation Plan (could be embedded in other plans) • LEA/school administrators go through NC FALCON and support teacher use • FA is incorporated in existing initiatives • Teachers provided adequate time to complete all modules (e.g., one module per month with discussion and reflection after each) • Fidelity checks (e.g. observations, view of FA plans)
