  1. Opportunities in ONCS What is ONCS? What is ONCS doing? Why does ONCS need you? Top Ten Reasons to get involved in ONCS C.Witzig BNL witzig@bnl.gov phone: 7821 http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/publish/gaius/1999/misc/opportunities_in_oncs_jun99.ppt

  2. What is ONCS? • ONCS = Online Computing Systems Group • Does a whole bunch of software things within the online group (see next slide) • Is a small group (7 members), welcomes new members! Why does ONCS need you? • There is still a lot of work to do • Many subsystems come online later than originally projected • Vital role for running the experiment, interaction with the user

  3. What sort of software do we do? • OO software in C++ and Java • Use of commercial product CORBA (Orbix) for distributed computing • Database (Objectivity/DB - same as offline) • Real time (VxWorks) Projects to do • Java GUIs for all kind of monitoring • Databases • Electronic logbook • Help subsystems develop online related code • Ancillary Systems (slow controls) • Depends also on your interests... Requirements • interested in computing • be based at BNL (at least temporarily)

  4. Top 10 Reasons to join ONCS • You get to know the experiment as a whole and learn a lot about the data that is being taken • Global view of the detector • A lot of interaction with a lot of people - get to know many of your collaborators • Learn a lot about computing (hardware and software) …. • …. a lot of which you can use elsewhere -- “increase your market value” • Get invited to the ONCS end of run party in August • you don’t have to be able to count up to 10 to join
