A rover that is finding information on Mars may need to drive along steep terrain. The current rovers are limited because if they flip over they are not able to continue the journey, because they can not gain solar energy to drivedue to the fact that the solar panels aren’t facing the sun anymore. Rovers!
This is the Spirit Rover, if this flipped over, it would be unable to continue because it couldn’t keep driving or flip itself back over. This is the Curiosity rover, this wouldn’t be able to flip back over either because of the way it is designed.
The spirit rover became stuck in soil on May 1, 2009. They spent months trying to free the rover and in the end decided to use it as a stationary research platform. They did tests with lighter versions of the spirit rover but it was hard to reproduce the same conditions as there is on Mars. The Spirit Rover!
