  1. The Quiet LeaderContemporary Leadership Theory Jamie Bruce HTM 491

  2. Overview • “Leading from behind” • Actions speak louder than words • Motivation comes from giving others credit rather than taking it yourself • Ego and aggression are not necessary

  3. Lao Tzu Touched on this idea in a classic Taoist text, Tao TeChing: The very highest is barely known by men, Then comes that which they know and love, Then that which is feared,Then that which is despised. He who does not trust enough will not be trusted. When actions are performedWithout unnecessary speech,People say “We did it!” Here again, the highest level of leadership is virtually invisible.

  4. Characteristics • Invisible • Subtle in their work and it generally goes unrewarded • Do small things that make a big difference • Prefer to write than speak • Realistic and Practical • Reject cynicism and are neither optimistic and pessimistic • Tenacity • Work hard to protect their reputation and careers • Open Mind • Don’t try to be advocates of any cause • Buying Time • Work to look at all sides before making a hasty decision • Process information internally, reflect, and then respond • Compromising Attitude • Remain calm and collected even during crisis and look to strike compromises through negotiations

  5. 4 P’s for an Introvert in an Extroverted World – Jennifer Kahnweiler • Preparation • Having a strategy and a plan • Presence • Be in the moment and focus on the outside world • Push • Step out of your comfort zone • Practice These help to tackle the introverts biggest challenges, stress, perception gaps, career derailers, and invisibility.

  6. Quiet Leadership and Me • During the simulations in 480 I was told I am a silent leader • I am naturally an introvert just like the quiet leader and have to remind myself to step outside my comfort zone in some situations. The four P’s will help with this. • Quiet/introverted leaders can often have negative first impressions. This includes the impression that they are withdrawn, gruff, insensitive, and even rude. They are often asked “What’s Wrong” when introverts don’t feel anything is wrong. I am often asked this same question so I have to make a conscious effort to not look too serious and to be a little more outgoing.
