Contemporary Leadership Theories include • Attribution theory of leadership • Being ascribed by followers but not as an objective fact based on traits and behavior • Psychodynamic approach to leadership • Understandings of leadership experienced and learned in early socialization • Guide leader behavior and follower reaction, and lead to an emotional relation between leader and follower

Charismatic Leadership • Charisma: “A certain quality of an individual personality, by virtue of which he/she is set apart from ordinary people and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities. Such qualities are not accessible by the average person.” • Max Weber

Charismatic Leadership • Characteristics or charismatic leaders • Vision and articulation • Personal risks to achieve the vision • Sensitive to follower need • Behaviors that are out of the ordinary • Charismatic leaders are likely to be extraverted, self-confident, and achievement-oriented Use of VISIONS

  6. People can be trained to exhibit charismatic behaviors • Maintaining an optimistic view • Using passion for generating enthusiasm • Communication verbally and nonverbally • Create relationships with followers • Look for the best potential in followers
