1. Define your intentions • Who is this aimed at? Which audience? Universities will want to see a range of photographic skills and techniques – unless you are aiming for a specific course Employers may also want a range – clients will want specific skills demonstrated
2. Paper V Digital? • Where possible, have both. • Photography is all about that final print; some people will only accept paper • http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/sites-to-create-portfolio-for-photographers/ • Flickr
3. Theme • Depends entirely on your intentions • Think about telling a story with small sets of 3-4 images • It might be appropriate to only have B&W, or portraiture. It all depends… • Avoid a pick & mix approach – unless you are going for a generic photography degree • If an assistants job – show you know the photographers style
4. Selection • Get help from a friend who can be critical and who has some art & design experience • Your favourites may not be the ones! • Initially select 30 • Then cut down to between 15-20 • If ANY question mark about the image, DO NOT include • Keep Theme and Intentions in mind
5. Order • Start with your best – the one that makes people go WOW. It should set expectations • Create mini stories (sets) • Juxtapose images in terms of colour, contrast, tones etc (but not subject) • End with your best too! • Purchase a stylish and contemporary folder http://www.popphoto.com/how-to/2013/03/tips-pro-build-better-photography-portfolio
Task – Week 1 • Define Intentions: Who? Why? When? • Set aside a budget for a paper portfolio. Set aside some time to look at digital ones • Note down your theme/s. Do a mental audit • Using the images you have today and your theme/intentions; begin to select. Get a friend to look at your work with a critical eye • Bring in all images for selection next Wed. Bring in any evidence of starting a digital portfolio. Bring in any questions By the end of next week you should have made a good start to both
Task - Week 2 • You should have with you all your images that could possibly make the cut • You should have a clearly defined set of intentions and themes within these • Work with a partner to finalise selection so far (this is a work in progress) • Show the lecturer • Use the computers available and in B block to work on your digital portfolio
