“That’s just you interpretation.” • Take yourself out of the picture • Have them look at the passage directly and ask how does that read to you? • Many people give knee-jerk reactions – Proverbs 18:13 • Make sure everything is heard first • It shows humility by being willing to hear what another person thinks- Proverbs 18:12; James 1:19
“That’s just you interpretation.” • When someone as a different conclusion, ask for evidence • “You must have evidence to support your conclusion, would you mind showing me what it is?” • Must be ready with book, chapter and verse for what we claim – 1 Peter 4:11 • Must have Lord’s authority – Colossians 3:17 • We also should be complete in our teaching- Acts 20:27
Why do people reject the truth? • Some convinced that no understanding of the Scriptures can be relied upon • Convinced that every reading involves man’s opinions and is thus biased or slanted • There ARE some people who offer opinions instead of truth – 2 Peter 3:15-17 • Does this mean there is no truth? • God’s Word remains truth – John 17:17
Why do people reject the truth? • Finding Truth requires accepting that truth exists – John 8:32 • God desires that we know the truth – 1 Timothy 2:3,4 • God’s will is understandable – Ephesians 5:17 • According to the Bible there is truth which can be understood
Why do people reject the truth? • Some convinced that any understanding is acceptable • Only ONE – Ephesians 4:4-6 • It was delivered only ONCE – Jude 3 • Rather that rule out certain beliefs because of Scriptures – just get along • Many opinions lead to destruction – Matthew 7:13,14
Why do people reject the truth? • Some are willing to take a random selection • Some understandings more plausible that others • Would you be willing to have a random person select a spouse for you? • Would you just take the nearest or most convenient place to live? • If you got sick, would we take just any old treatment?
Why do people reject the truth? • So which does a person choose? • Sift through various thoughts & deciding which are more plausible, more reasonable, and more credible • Instead if taking any old thought, or the one out ancestors always picked, let us examine the evidence, looking at the Scriptures
How Do We Know What God Wants Us To Do? • John 14:15 - Keep Commandments • 2 Peter 3:1,2 – Be mindful of what was written • Approved Examples – Commanded to follow Christ’s example – 1 Peter 2:21 • Use Apostles as examples – Philippians 3:17
How Do We Know What God Wants Us To Do? • Make conclusions from what must be implied in the Scriptures • Jesus using implication – Matthew 22:41-46 • Stay with what God said – make no assumptions – Galatians 1:6-10 • Do not add or take away – Deuteronomy 12:32
We Are to Understand What God Wants From Us • 2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
