New CONTRACT Instructor orientation CANADIAN Union of Public Employees Local 4600 – Unit 2 Thursday 22 August 2019, 5:25-5:40pm, Room 2017 DT <This version updated 23 Aug 2019>
Agenda (proposed) • Welcome to the Carleton world of contract instructorship • Perspective • Using the union to your benefit • Current Collective Agreement (overview) • Problem resolution
Welcome to the Carleton world of contract instructorship • Exciting new adventure, full of interesting experiences • Worth it all just seeing their faces suddenly light up when they “get it” • Will push you to be better – communicator, organizer, leader
Perspective on EMPLOYMENT as a CI • You are filling a temporary vacancy in the academy (reality is about 1 in 5 courses are taught by CI’s) • Maximum of 3.0 credits workload per year (min/max earnings $43,836 per current collective agreement) • Generally considered to be part time • Assumption (by the university) is that contract instructors will probably be employed in some capacity off campus. Exceptions retired professors, graduate students, post-graduate fellows, visiting professors • Your “other” job might involve professional practice, research, advocacy, etc., in government, high tech, private sector, etc. • Reality: quite a few of our contract instructors teach at both Carleton and University of Ottawa to make ends meet. Some also moonlight at Algonquin, Cite Collegiale or Heritage College
more perspective on “ You” as an academic employee • The terms and conditions of your employment are governed by: • Your fixed term employment contract • The collective agreement between the union and the university • Provincial labour law • University policies and procedures. • What you and your supervisor work out, within the limits of the above
Using the union to your benefit… • Current Collective Agreement (overview) • Benefits • Health and Dental for you and your family • Disability Insurance • Employee Assistance Plan • Accommodation (eg. religious, disability) • Sick leave • Handling of disputes and grievances • Professional Development Fund • Pay
Using the union to your benefit… • Resolving differences • You and your Chair should be able to work out most problems using the resources available • Escalate to your Shop Steward when you can’t work out something • Your Shop Steward has access to the entire union body of knowledge and experience in academic employment, labour law, etc. • If your department does not have a Shop Steward, consider taking on the job yourself. We offer excellent training • Your union wants to see you treated fairly and respectfully
are we going on strike? • Collective agreement expires on 31 August 2019 • Union and management are currently in negotiations (we met yesterday and achieved some modest agreement on a couple of issues) • We still have much to discuss and we have at least four dates set for upcoming meetings • We want your input and agreement on our collective priorities. The more minds brought to bear, the better the outcome will be. • Unit 1 – Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants are also negotiating so we have a position of strength when we work collectively.
Next steps • Contract Instructor Caucus (consultation with you - the members), next scheduled session is Friday 20 September 2-4pm followed by networking over a pint and snack food • Networking opportunities during university orientation week (eg. pancake breakfast) • Collective Bargaining – still looking for one member for the Negotiating Team • Fill out the next Member Survey (one done, one or more to come) • Reporting to you - watch for the CUPE 4600 “Contract Instructors Digest” • General Membership Meetings – Wednesday 02 October 2019, 1800-20h30
