5. Security Update • Border conflict between South Sudan and Sudan affected CARE’s health programme in Unity State – refugee influx with emergency operations and reduced access to health facilities. Teacher training (by WTI and WR) cancelled in area. • Temporary closure of Malakal, Wau and Rubkona/Unity airfields – cancelation of BSF field monitoring visits. • Jonglei crisis; IMC (Akobo County) – closure of 3 PHCUs, but surge medical capacity at Akobo hospital and Walgak PHCC. • Jonglei crisis – attack on Duk Padiet on 16/1/2012, cause of evacuation of staff for 3 weeks (IMA / IRD). • Warrap State; Tonj East inter-clan fighting - Ananatak PHCU closed until mid-April (CCM).

9.10.WATSAN Survey • Objective : Assessing the current operational status of boreholes that were drilled (and rehabilitated) during the different phases of BSF (2006-2011). • A borehole will be sustainable if : • - Design and construction are technically correct; • Maintenance and the small repairs is well undertaken by the WUC or, when more serious repairs, by the (trained) artisans.
