California 5-Year Plan Submitted to National EFNEP in December 2010 Goals/Program Priorities for FY2010-11 to FY2014-2015* FY10 as baseline • Increasing Milk Group Intake (Adult EFNEP) • Improving Fruit Intake (Adult EFNEP) • Improving the percent of families not running out of food at the end of the month (Adult EFNEP) • Increasing youth’s knowledge of Human Nutrition (Youth EFNEP) *Moving forward fiscal year will be written in the following format, FY2010-11 as FY11

California EFNEP Profile/NEERS Recall • FY2009-10….Participants report increasing fruit intake by .3 cups Entry- .9 cup Exit- 1.2 cups • 44% of participants at exit report eating no fruit56% report eating some fruit • FY 2015 Goal….Increase fruit intake by at least .5 cup Example….Entry .9 cup, exit 1.4 cups

  7. How does CA EFNEP compare? • National EFNEP FY2009-10….Participants reported increasing fruit intake by .4 cups of fruit • US adults….. Reported consuming .6 cups of fruit. Compare with CA EFNEP’s .9 cup.

  8. What is recommended? • 2 cups fruit/day for women 19-30 yr. * Based on FY2009-10 CA EFNEP NEERS data

  9. How will we measure progress? • 24 hour food recalls, compare entry with exit. • Track progress annually • Small steps…gradual increase to .5 cups gain entry to exit.

How will we meet our fruit goal? • Increase our own knowledge of client challenges/hurdles to eating more fruit. • Increase our knowledge of resources • Role model eating of fruit • Increase our clients’ knowledge, skills and self-efficacy. • Why fruit is good for their children. • Why it is important to eat fruit.

Fruit & ESBA………..Ideas • Lesson #2, Plan, Shop, $ave • Incorporate shopping for fruit, buying in season, recipe planning • Lesson #3, Vary Your Veggies…Focus on Fruit • Choose a fruit recipe to model or distribute • Offer fruit tastings with several lessons • Helping participants with food security will promote consumption of fruit.
