What do academics do? • Teach and support learning • Assess and give feedback • Design and plan learning activities • Create environments in which students learn and are supported • Engage in CPD
Continuing Professional Development • participating in meetings, conferences and seminars • presenting internal seminars • postgraduate study • discussion and networking • learning from students (feedback) • mentoring and supervision • peer supported review • updating, and delivery of teaching • critical review and preparation of teaching materials • reading and reviewing journal articles • secondment and work shadowing • consultancy activity • undertaking research and the presentation of papers • observing and reviewing teaching practice • extending range and scope of teaching practice – new activities • undertaking research ethics training • external examining.

HEA Fellowships and UK PSF Descriptors • AFHEA (D1) - the individual’s personal practice activity • FHEA (D2) – the individual’s personal practice activity • SFHEA (D3) – the development and mentoring others in learning and teaching • PFHEA (D4) – the demonstrable impact in learning and teaching activity by influencing policy and strategy
SFHEA - Experienced staff Demonstrating impact and influence through, for example, responsibility for leading, managing or organisingprogrammes, subjectsand/or disciplinary areas Including subject mentors and staff who support those new to teaching And staff with departmental and/or wider teaching and learning support advisory responsibilities within an institution
PFHEA - Highly experienced academics With evidence of a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice. a. Highly experienced and/or senior staff with wide-ranging academic or academic-related strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with key aspects of teaching and supporting learning b. Staff responsible for institutional strategic leadership and policymaking in the area of teaching and learning c. Staff who have strategic impact and influence in relation to teaching and learning that extends beyond their own institution
