  1. Cooking up a perfect usability study for the Pizza Palace website Wow! What a great pizza! + = If we use the right ingredients to build Pizza Palace’s website, it is sure to be a hit. Our budget allows for one summative study or two formative studies to help us learn how successful the design of the website is. Here, we explain why two formative studies are the way we should go.

  2. Summative v. Formative Each type of study has its place.

  3. Summative • Here are the reasons why you would conduct a summative usability study. While we do need to understand the users’ paths and intentions, the rest of the results we’d receive would not beneficial to us at this early stage in development. • Determines user paths and intentions • Evaluates the site through defined measures • Compares results with usability requirements • Establishes a benchmark • Checks the overall usability of site

  4. Our team has just started to build the website. To conduct a summative study, we would want the design to be complete.

  5. We could judge our design against those of our competitors. However, we have not established our own internal design guidelines to test our current design against.

  6. For a summative study, we would need a large number of study participants, which is time consuming and costly. We’re pressed for time and on a budget.

  7. Formative • A formative study will give us the type of results that are most beneficial to our current stage in the design process. A formative study… • Allows for quick iterations • Gives us answers to questions before we move forward • Grants the ability to make changes as we move forward • Pinpoints the expectations of users • Works on a low budget • Works with a tight time restriction

  8. Formative Studies are… inexpensive quick …and can be conducted as we move through the design process.

  9. A formative study is our best bet for the right usability study for Pizza Palace’s website. There’s that delicious Pizza Palace pizza again! It’s so good that it most certainly deserves a great website, built on the right kind of findings.
