What is the Ombuds Office? • A safe place to seek guidance about resolving conflicts or concerns • Confidential • Neutral • Informal • Independent
Why an Ombuds? Zen Sarcasm: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them. Conflict is normal and inevitable
What the Ombuds Does: • Listen to faculty and staff and treat with respect • Discuss concerns and help clarify important issues • Identify options to resolve problems informally • Gather information, offer referrals to other university resources • Explain university policies and procedures • Offer coaching, for example, preparing for a difficult conversation • Facilitate conversations and lines of open communication • Consult with university about broad issues and trends, recommend institutional change when appropriate
What the Ombuds Does NOT Do: • Take sides • Keep official records • Replace other university conflict and grievance processes • Make decisions for anyone • Offer legal advice • Make, enforce or set aside university policies or decisions • Serve as a place to put the university on notice of claims • Serve as an advocate for any individual or entity
What About My Privacy? • Confidentiality and neutrality are the cornerstones of the Ombuds office. • The Ombuds will not share your information without your permission unless there is a risk of imminent harm. • The Ombuds reports to the president of the university about trends and provides feedback, but maintains confidentiality in all cases.
Contact the Ombuds: We believe it is most effective to meet in person, but we will work with you over the phone if you prefer. We do not recommend contact by email other than to schedule an appointment, because we cannot guarantee your confidentiality.
