What is Leisure? • Leisure time: • Free time or recreational time. • Time spent outside of compulsory activities such as eating, sleeping, working, attending school, doing homework, etc.
Leisure Activities • Outdoor activities-parks/hiking • Reading/writing • TV/movies/theater • Sports • Playing with toys/games • Arts and crafts
TV/Movies/Theater • TV: commercially available since late 1930s. • Movies: late 19th century. First were silent films. • Theater: First performance in Egypt-2500 BCE
Sports • Dates back as far as early 2700 BCE • Some sports are 2500+ years old: • Hurling (similar to field hockey) in Ireland • Harpastum (similar to rugby) in Rome • Cuju (similar to soccer) in China • Polo in Persia • Olympic Games in Greece • Sports impacted by geography.
What is Art? • “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
Art (Con’t) • Subjective • Takes on many forms • Not static…what we call art today may or may not have been thought of as art when it was created. • E.g. Modern abstract art. • Art impacted by geography.

Activity-Mosaic • You will be creating a mosaic. You will be creating a picture using dime sized pieces of construction paper. • You must fill up the entire 8.5 by 11 piece of paper. • Your mosaic needs to be an object, landscape, or design. • Inappropriate or suggestive themes are not allowed. • This is a credit or credit no credit assignment. • You will have an hour to do this assignment. • Put your name on the back of your paper and turn it in when you are finished.
