I. SUBATOMIC PARTICLES • Protons-(+) located in nucleus (Atomic #) • Neutrons-(0) located in nucleus • Electrons-(-) located in energy levels surrounding the nucleus • 1st-holds up to 2 • 2nd-holds up to 8 • 3rd holds up to 18 *Must fill one level before moving to the next. Valence e- = electrons in the outermost level. • Neutrons + Protons = Atomic Mass
Periodic Table Trends • Group # (go across top of periodic table) = # of Valence Electrons • Period # (Go down the side) = # of energy levels. • We will deal mostly with Metals & Nonmetals
Metals Noble Gases Nonmetals
II. BONDING • 2 Major Types • Ionic-electrons are transferred • Covalent-electrons are shared • Metal-Nonmetal= Ionic (ex. NaCl) • Nonmetal-nonmetal= Covalent • Metal-Metal=Metallic
Hydrogen- “Wild Card” Not really considered a metal • Generally forms a Covalent Bond w/ groups 14, 15, 16 & Ionicwith 17 • Carbon (C) Compounds-When “C” bonds to “H”= covalent • Organic compounds (naturally occuring)
