  1. Sustainability through remanufacturing in India: A case study on mobile handsets. • This article was written by PragamRathorea, Srinivas Kota and AmareshChakrabarti. • This article shows the current state of waste in India and how their mass dumps are effecting the environment bady. • Also shown in the article is how India is one of the top recyclers in the world due the “rag pickers” that sift through the mass dumps in search of valuable materials to exchange for cash. • Lastly the studies undertaken in this paper lead to a proposed model of how to implement remanufacturing in the most efficient way for India.

  2. Three most important findings from this paper. • Remanufacturing and India, a perfect fit. • Prevents waste from reaching the mass dumps that over a million people find work in. • Makes mobile phones available to all citizens at a price they can afford. • Rag pickers in India help to make India the top recycler in the world and remanufacturing is a big part of that.

  3. The benefits of remanufacturing. • There is definitely a market for remanufactured phones in more places than India due to the reduced cost of the phone. • Annual sales of remanufactured products are $53 billion • AT&T and Xerox saved $100 million in 19 months and $20 million per year respectively by remanufacturing used products. • It also surprising to know that there is only one major mobile phone company that has a take-back program for old mobile phones.

  4. The exposure of the mobile phone eco-system in India. • Paper shows the life-cycle of the mobile phones very clearly. • Proposes a new system for distributing remanufactured mobile phones. • This model promises a self-sustainable option with demand of remanufactured handsets from lower income segments and supply of old handsets from higher income segments as inputs for remanufacturing.

  5. Questions Posed. • How important are collection rates to a remanufacturing business model? • Collection rates are the focal point of the whole remanufacturing system. • High collection rates would mean that they are not going directly to the mass dump. • System would be stable with high demand for remanufactured handsets. • Low collection rates would lead to a collapse in the whole system and the consequences would be severe for the environment.

  6. How can high collection rates be achieved? • Advertising to higher income segment of the Indian population. • Getting bigger companies to implement take-back policies as currently there is only one mobile phone company with it. • Implement the model put forward in this paper to as only re-used remanufactured phones reach the mass e-waste section.
