3. Background Innovations, discoveries & revolutions have witnessed in order to meet the urgent requirements of the people.
The trend could be seen in the sectors like agriculture, sea, milk product and space.
Similar trends now we notice in the field of Information Science.
Here emphasis would be in the area of Library & Info. Science.
4. Why Digital Library? Information explosion has led to the creation of huge amount of information
These needs to be processed, stored, and disseminated

First digital library initiative came in 1994, when the National Science Foundation, the Advanced Resource Projects Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in US used for their documentation.
Electronic, Virtual, Library without walls, and several such terms so far being used to describe it in different context.

7. Some Definitions The digital library is now widely accepted to mean the use of digital technology in the provision of library services and operations, which includes acquisition, organization, storage, conservation and dissemination of information to its users.
Some Standard definition may as follows:

Def…. “Organization that provide the resource, including the specialized staff, to select, structure, offer intellectual access to interpret, distribute, preserve the integrity and ensure the persistence over time of collections of digital work so that they are economically available for use by a defined communities or set of communities” (Walter 1998)

14. PU Library: An Overview Shifted to present campus in 1963
Collection - 6.5 lac
Collections mostly in English, but sizeable collection is also available in Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Persian Arabic.
Entered the threshold of IT in Feb. 1988. With the installation of 3 PCs
15. Modernization and Upgradation Received a UGC grant of 50 lac in 1995 to update and modernize the facilities in library.
Installation of Computers in all sections of the library (Dec. 1996)
Connected to Central Server, LAN.
GISTNIC terminal setup with the help of NIC, Delhi for off line access to databases providing general information services to users.

OPAC, Barcode Technology are some of the important step in modernization.

Spending 1.2 Crore every year on Journals
Online access of around 5000 journal under UGC-INFLIBNET Programme.

Resource sharing and networking in operation through Delnet and other organisations.
19. Digital Library and Digitization Setup in 2005.
The section basically caters to the needs of the person looking for E-Journal, E-Books, Dissertations, Thesis, and several other categories of the databases for which we have the electonic links.
Reades may use CD, DVD, Pen-Drive for taking the data. The print-out is other option in this regard.
20. Continue... Presently we have six outlets, we are looking for 50 more in near future.

One of the centres for the document delivery among the 6 designated in the country.
21. Digitization Started in 2004 with NRI fund.
In the first phase Manuscripts (1492) are digitized, Rare books (20,000) and Thesis will follow.
National Mission For Manuscripts guideline are followed.
22. Security Aspects 47 CCTV Cameras have been installed at various locations inside the library with archiving facility.
RFID technology is in the pipe-line.
