GENERAL • Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted for a wide number of factors: • building materials available • weather conditions • to land prices • ground conditions • specific uses and • aesthetic reasons • Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work.
What are the elements of Building Construction? Refers to the dictionary Building • Something that is built, as for human habitation; a structure. • The act, process, art, or occupation of constructing. • Element - A fundamental, essential, or irreducible constituent of a composite entity. • Elements - The basic assumptions or principles of a subject.
Type of Building • Residential building • constructed for residential occupancy and can accommodate a person (s) to live in. • Non-residential building • used for some purpose other than residential.
Residential building • single family housing (bungalow, terrace house) • multiple family housing (apartments, condominiums).
Non-residential building • commercial (bank, shopping mall, office building), • manufacturing/industrial (factory, refinery, mill) • agricultural (barn, greenhouse), • educational building (school, college, library), • government building (police station, post office), • military building (barracks, block house, fort) • religious building (mosque, temple, church).
COMPONENTS OF A BUILDING • Substructure • lowest support of a structure • Basically a structure that inside the ground level such as foundation, tunnel, cofferdam. • Superstructure • Extended part of the substructure • A structure that stands above the ground level • Example: Form of beam, slab and column • Material: steel structure, wood or reinforce concrete.
