Field Work Project Scoring Criteria

2. Reading Ethnography • When we read ethnography, we wish to address the following questions. Student writers of ethnography are responsible for providing the following information: • What is the writer’s source of data? • How are the writer’s ideas confirmed or disconfirmed? • What interpretations are offered?

3. Reading Ethnography • What is the culture described? • What makes it a culture? • Is the style of writing convincing? • Can we see the places and people described? • Can we understand what it would be like to be an insider in this culture?

4. Field Work Project: Action Research • Fieldworking requires “action” research in that you are actively out in the field systematically observing, recording, collecting, and thinking about how language and culture work together. • As we have discussed in class, Field Work requires authentic documentation of your field notes. Although this process is complicated, all you must really do is demonstrate that your field notes meet the following criteria in order for the instructor to award credit. • Field notes that do not meet this requirement may be rejected for grading.

5. Field Notes Scoring • Field Notes scoring will be based on the following “Dedication to Learning” standard criteria: • Student Field Notes demonstrate the timely, systematic, and detailed observations of a specific “field” of study for an exploration into culture and language use • Student Field Notes are authentic, verifiable, directly and accurately linked to the narrative results. • Student Field Notes demonstrate how the writer interweaves feelings, beliefs, and reflections into the fieldworking process.

6. Field Notes Scoring • Student Field Notes produce the “raw” material for the final paper, and the instructor can trace the development of further thinking and research based on a Field Notes entry. • Student Field Notes, once compiled and submitted for scoring, present the instructor with vital informationas they offer specific details and description,as well as reflexive personal responses [Record and Respond is present as template requires] • Student Field Notes demonstrate personal integrity and clearly represent the writer as a credible researcher.

7. Field Notes Scoring The Dedication to Learning Standard will be used to score student Field Notes in the following manner: • Field Notes are credible • Field Notes are transferred to Fieldwriting narrative passages and shared for peer review to develop organization and cohesion

8. Field Notes Scoring • Field Notes present observational data in narrative form with reflexive personal commentary that is academic and persuasive. • Field Notes demonstrate effort commensurate with daily and weekly collection, review, and thoughtful reflection

9. Field Notes Scoring ECA Standards Addressed in Order: • Uses the general skills and strategies of the writing process. • Organizes ideas to achieve cohesion in writing • Uses grammatical, mechanical, and stylistic conventions in written compositions • Gathers and synthesizes information.
