B. CME in In-situ data sets at Earth. Yuko Hada Chi- Ju Wu 2012/01/24. We select 4 events from CME catalog. ※ All events are Halo CMEs. Today, I show you only March event. (Because I cannot study deeply. ). 2012/03/04. Left: SOHO/LASCO C2 Right: SOHO/LASCOC3.

GOES-15 data 2012/03/03 – 2012/03/12 Ordinary, Dst index dropped about 3 to 4 days, after CME occurred. First, CMEs are accelerated and gradually reduce their speeds. 3/7 3/5 3/4 • 3/4 and 3/5 CMEs→ dropped • 3/7 CME → not dropped!! (This CME is faster than 3/4 and 3/5.) Why?!
ACE data on 2012/03/04 – 2012/03/11 • There are 3 big peaks during 3/4 to 3/10. • Bz>0 North, Bz<0 South • 3/4 and 3/5 CMEs = South aspect • → Dst dropped • 3/7 CME = North aspect • → Dst not dropped • 【Myexpectation】 • 3/5 CME catch up with 3/4 CME and they merged. These 2 CMEs occurred Dst dropped. • 3/7 CME is faster than merged CMEs. However, Bz shows North aspect. This means that 3/7 CME didn’t affect Dst index. North South
GOES-15 data 2012/03/03 – 2012/03/12 Merged 2 CMEs!! (3/4 + 3/5) • 3/4 + 3/5 CMEs→ Dst dropped • 3/7 CME → Dst not dropped
