Lessons Learned Applying S 1000D on CV 90 Tech Pubs Presentation for S 1000D User Forum Paris, France 2003-10-01 By Thomas Faleij Technical Documentation Coordinator Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV)
The Combat Vehicle (CV) 90 ”Family” Combat Vehicle 9040A Combat Vehicle 9040B CV 90 Air Defence CV 90 Armoured Recovery Vehicle CV 90 Command Post CV 90 Forward Observer
Around the Corner • 5 new types of CV 90 Vehicles for International Missions • CV 90 with double120 mm Grenade Launcher • CV 90 for Electronic War Fare • The Family will consist of at least 13 types in a couple of years
Decisions on S 1000D • 1999 the CV 90 Project Decided to Migrate the Operator´s Manuals and the Maintenance Manuals to S 1000D Change 8 • We came from traditional desk top publishing creating each tab in a binder as one large FrameMaker file
Decisions on S 1000D(Cont.) • We decided that paper output in accordance with the Swedish Defence Layout Specification was Priority 1 • IETPs Priority 2 (later) • The Scope of binders to migrate was 13 A5 Operator´s Manuals (2 – 3 per vehicle type) and 22 A4 Maintenance Manuals
Strategy and Realisation • Guidelines for the use of S 1000D • Creating a DMRL • Creating CV 90 SNS • Modifying S 1000D Information Code • Development of Information Set Structure (ISS) format • Development of an AECMA Automated Print (AAP) application • Delivery of DMs and printing process
Guidelines • FMV Common Guidelines • Begins with a copy of S 1000D Change 8 TOC and Applicable/Not applicable and references to FMV rules and regulations where not applicable • Incorporates modifications and clarifications of different parts of S 1000D
CV 90 Specific Guidelines • Examples • Legacy project -> specification of 8-bit TIFF-format • Process instructions for keeping sizes of illustrations, Multi Procedural, etc • CV 90 SNS • Use of Applicability
Lessons Learned from Guidelines • Using S 1000D requires Guidelines (it is very open in some parts and some parts needs to be defined by the project) • Using S 1000D requires very good under-standing of the spec on both sides • Guidelines need to be very specific in some parts • Our General Guidelines can be found at http://www.fmv.se/tinfo/WORD/AECMAGUIDES.PDF
Creating a DMRL • Started 1999, Method; Page by page, All 6 vehicle types of Operator´s Manuals first and the Maintenance Manuals thereafter • Finished Summer 2003, Operator´s Manuals DMRL incorporates 1 600 DMs, Maintenance Manual DMRL incorporates 3 300 DMs
Lessons Learned from Creating a DMRL • More work than expected (more than 3 years) • We have rewritten text and illustrations to minimize the number of DMs • The text and illustrations were not written to be reused • Strict routines for updating of the DMRL are important
Creating CV 90 SNS • The Swedish Army have a break down structure for army vehicles tech pubs (based on Volvo Trucks break down structure) • We used that as a basis and coordinated the SNS development with the Swedish Leopard MBT project • The CV 90 and Leopard common SNS is basis for the Combat Vehicle Example SNS in Issue 2 of S 1000D (with DEF STAN 00-60 definitions)
Lessons Learned from Creating CV 90 SNS • The SNS fell out as a result of the DMRL development • We should have started with the Maintenance Manuals (they follow the break down structure better than the Operator´s Manuals) • Strict routines for updating of the SNS are important
Modifying S 1000D Information Code • > 90 % of the existing Information Codes were applicable • Army / Land Vehicle specific ICs were added as e.g. • Driving • Transport on truck • Transport on rail way • Transport by Sea • Transport by Air • Fill with flusher liquid, etc
Printing Army Vehicle Technical Publications • The CV 90 Op Manuals have been A5 binders with leaflets and the Maintenance Manuals A4 Loose leaf system with running page numbering and TOC that runs over the whole leaflet or tab • That requirement was valid also when printing the publications from Change 8 DMs
Printing Army Vehicle Technical Publications (Cont.) • There is no support for binding DMs into a publication (or a leaflet) in Change 8 • We therefore created an Information Set Structure (ISS) DTD that lists all DMs in a leaflet or tab • We also created an AECMA Automated Print (AAP) DTD for the large SGML file generated from the ISS file
Creating ISS-files Long list of Ref DMs
Status of Deliveries • All Op Manuals Delivered and Printed • The first Maintenance Manual is printed • Work in progress on development of ISS files for the Operator´s Manuals for the vehicles for international missions • There is a lot of work left to be done the coming years…
FMV IETPs • We are planning development of • Swedish Style Sheets (based on the Output Specification in Issue 2) • Guidelines for Production for Screen Presentation • Allow Multimedia Format in S 1000D DM DTDs • Guidelines for Production for Reusability
FMV IETPs(Cont.) • Two Classes of Functionality • Ordinary MS IE • MS IE with Extended Functionality where the user can • Create personal links and comments • Create public links and comments • Zoom illustrations • etc
Important Decision on IETP Production Templates/Filters/Style Sheets
Misc Lesson Learned • Applic in IdStatus… • No Ref DM in Supeqiup-list • Illustrations are not allowed in PrelReqs after the Supequip-list…
