Knowledge Transfer Partnerships • What is Knowledge Transfer Partnerships?Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is a UK-wide programme to encourage business/knowledge base collaborations. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships help businesses and organisations to improve their competitiveness and/or productivity through the use of the knowledge, technology and skills that reside within academic institutions
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships • Operating since 1975 • Part funded by Government, usually 50% • Typical total value 200k Euro over 2 years • Employs quality graduate • Industry based placement • Solves real problems • Employed by University • 20 successful programmes since 1988
Company partner - this is usually a company (including not-for-profit) but in some cases it can be a health or education organisation or Local Authority. KTP supports a broad cross-section of UK firms, regardless of size Knowledge-base partner - this is a higher education institution (e.g. university ), college or research organisation (public or privately funded) KTP Associates – Each partnership employs one or more high calibre Associates (recently qualified people), transferring the knowledge the company is seeking into the business via a strategic project
The aim of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is to:Strengthen the competitiveness, wealth creation and economic performance of the UK by the enhancement of knowledge and skills and the stimulation of innovation through collaborative projects between business (including social enterprises) and the knowledge base;
with the objectives of: Facilitating the transfer of knowledge and the spread of technical and business skills, through innovation projects undertaken by high calibre, recently qualified, people under the joint supervision of personnel from business and the knowledge base Providing company-based training for graduates in order to enhance their business and specialist skills within the context of the project Stimulating and enhancing business relevant education and research undertaken by the knowledge base Increasing the extent of interactions by businesses with the knowledge base and their awareness of the contribution the knowledge base can make to business development and growth
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships will strive to: Provide a managed risk environment within which a business can undertake strategic change Provide a challenging project to the KTP Associate and provide the necessary support and skills to develop potential business leaders of tomorrow Facilitate co-operation with the aim of achieving successful outcomes for all participants within the partnership Encourage an ongoing relationship beyond project completion between a company and their knowledge base partner to gain maximum benefit for all
Consultancies, Research Grants, Industrially Funded Research,Informal Research/Academic Exchange These are not covered in detail as each country /partner will deal with these issues in their own manner
UoP Consultancy Point of Contact • Purple Door • Purple Door is a service for businesses, public and voluntary sector organisations and individual entrepreneurs in the South East. • Its aim is to support development, enterprise and innovation, and to enhance workforce skills, by providing access to the facilities, knowledge and expertise of the University, its academic staff and its students.
How it Works • Purple Door offers the convenience of a single point of contact for all the support functions, advice, resources, recruitment and research facilities available from the University of Portsmouth and from the various government agencies involved in regional development.
Services Offered • Analysis, Testing and Evaluation - We have a full suite of chemical analytical techniques, electron microscopy facilities and various marine applications available. The University is also a nationally recognised Centre of Excellence for materials testing; with a wide range of testing services such as impact and stress laboratory; noise measurement; RFI and EMC measurement; material failure analysis and fatigue integrity assessment.

Research Grants • Joint Research Projects - These involve partnerships between the University and business organisations to conduct research for mutual financial benefit, or to secure research grants. There are a number of financial schemes that exist to help SMEs become involved in collaborative research. Through Purple Door, the University of Portsmouth can provide assistance and guidance regarding funding bodies such as DTI and EC.
Informal Research / Academic Exchange • Staff may come to the UoP for up to 1 year on an informal basis for research • There MUST be an outcome in the form of a Journal Paper or new knowledge generated • Research MUST be aligned i.e. a similar field • NO FEES except for materials • Exchange staff MUST meet their own in-country costs such as accommodation/food
Industrial Placements • Industrial placements are a key feature of the undergraduate degrees in the Faculty of Technology. Many of our full-time undergraduate programmes incorporate either a mandatory or optional placement year. • The Technology Placements Office (TPO) provides a comprehensive service to both students and employers.
