Background • Carol Ann Duffy is a Scottish-Irish (her mother’s parents and father’s parents were Irish) writer born on December 23rd 1955 • She was brought up in the Midlands and lived near Stafford • The eldest child in a family of four siblings; all of which are males • At the age of 14, she decided that she wanted to be a poet and gambled everything on this
Education • Received a degree in philosophy in 1977 • 1962-'67 St Austin RC Primary School, Stafford; '67-70 St Joseph's Convent School; '70 -74 Stafford Girls' High School; '74 -77 University of Liverpool (BA hons philosophy).
Personality • Very confident in her writing • However, a very modest person • Turned most circumstances to her life to good use in her poetry • She is a known romantic
Interests • Political left wing • Keen gambler • Obsessed with Mozart • A believer in the high arts
Relationships LOVE: • Early in her life, Duffy had a relationship with the poet, Adrian Henri, however she is currently in a gay relationship with her partner, Jackie Kay FAMILY: • When she decided to take on the career of a poet, her parents would often ask her “what {her} real job was going to be”?, even after she had started publishing her parents were never supportive of the path she choose. They only came to accept her job when she received the OBE for services to Literature in 1995 and the CBE in this year's New Year Honours • In 1995, she decided to become pregnant and to raise a child without the involvement of a father, this was the year that her daughter, Ella, was born
Early Experience • At the age of 15, a teacher sent Duffy’s work to a publisher, who were so impressed they published them
Jobs • Her first job was writing for TV shows • Duffy was the first female poet to be appointed to the position of poet laureate • She has recently finished a libretto for the Magic Flute for Opera North (to be premiered next April)
