What spellings should my child have? • Five to ten spellings a week to learn (starting after half term) • 10 spellings a week KS1 (Year 1 and 2) KS2 (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6)
High Frequency Words • Word lists which give a guide to the words children should be able to spell confidently in each age range.
Why is spelling so difficult? • Lots of different spelling patterns for the same sound e.g. Late, weight, great • Silent letters e.g. wrong • Lots of words are not phonetic…they can’t be sounded out • It can slow down children’s writing or limit want they want to say • BUT!!!! 85% of the English language is predictable…if we practise the rules
Spelling Strategies • Sounding out using letter sounds, not names. • E.g. c-a-t sh-o-p
Spelling Strategies • Playing word related games: I-spy, Hangman, Boggle, Scrabble, Odd One Out. • Make it fun!

Spelling strategies • Read lots!!! Discuss spellings of words, usual spellings. • E.g. what is surprising about the word photograph? • Encourage looking more closely at words
Spelling Strategies • Put the word in the context of a sentence. Helps to reinforce spelling and meaning. • E.g. I’m going to their house after school.
Boggle • How many words can you find in the grid? • Can you find a 4 letter word? • Can you put that word in a sentence? • How could we make this easier? Harder? • Which letters couldn’t you use and why?
Spelling Strategies • Sounding out syllables e.g. wed-nes-day
Spelling Strategies • Looking for words within words • E.g. there is a rat in separate.
Spelling strategies • Use lots of different media to build the word e.g. felt tips, play-doh, lego bricks. • What is your child interested in??
