VKB experience and Task Design HCI Assignment 3 & 4 | David Alexander Dickie
Background • Visual Knowledge Builder (VKB) may display numerical data in an object-based form • Thus numerically coded research data may be represented as such • An appropriate participant, task description, and follow-up materials are discussed
The participant • Researcher interested in the analysis of categorical data • Source of data unimportant – must be categorical • Research is based in the creation of factors • A factor explains responses to two or more variables • The researcher is happy with current methods • But always happy to try new approaches • Working through graduate training • Motivated by potential research aid • Will learn the use of VKB quickly
The task • Transformation of categorical data into VKB objects • First create single object • Duplicate to mimic appearance of Excel spreadsheet • Scaling scheme must be shared
The task • Spatial Parser is to be activated
Spatial Parser effect • Shades of grey illustrate potential relationships • Darkest shades represent strongest relationships • Variables responded to in similar fashion • “How much do you like math class” • “How much do you like design class” • “How much do you like physics class” • “How much do you like operations class” • A factor to describe preference of becoming an engineer?
Spatial Parser effect • Object-orientated display may suggest this before a factor analysis • Reduced time spent assessing descriptive statistics • This is not a replacement but a complement
