  2. British North america Confederation of Canada – union of colonies of BNA into the Dominion of Canada Established by the BNA Act on July 1, 1867 Prior to 1869 United States was the only independent nation in NA
  3. British North america Canada was referred to as British North America Consisted of the British Colonies Canada East Canada West New Brunswick PEI Nova Scotia Newfoundland Rupert’s Land Northwest Territories British Columbia Vancouver
  4. British North america
  5. British North america – Way of Life Atlantic colonies way of life was based on Fishing Shipbuilding Logging Central colonies way of life based on Manufacturing Fur trade farming Western colonies made up primarily of native groups and fur traders Depended primarily on fur trade to support their way of life
  6. British North america - Economy All colonies depended on markets in Britain United States COLONIES HAD VERY LITTLE CONNECTION WITH EACH OTHER
  7. British North america – Population & Economy 1860’s >80% of the population of BNA didn’t live in the few towns or cities that existed Lived in/on Lumber camps Farms Sea coast villages Major industries directly connected with Forests Land Sea Nova Scotia Built ships launched from every costal port Carried fish, coal, lumber to EUROPE, UNITED STATES, WEST INDIES
  8. British North america New Brunswick Specialized in the production of lumber Province of Canada (Ontario & Quebec) Farming and lumber were equally important
  9. British North america Population data becomes an important point later in confederation
  10. British North america Province of Canada Upper + Lower Canada Broken up into Canada East and Canada West Shared the same government…… BUT little else Remained two DISTINCT entities Canada West were primarily English-speaking Protestants Canada East were mostly French-speaking Catholics This becomes EXTREMELY important later
  11. British North america – Union Rejected Union of the colonies was first proposed by Lord Durham in 1839 Stated this in a report on the state of BNA affairs in 1839 It was rejected at this time Rejected again in 1858 after being discussed in the Canadian Legislature WHY was it rejected at this time?
  12. British North america – Union Rejected Colonies did not feel any sense of nationhood – why? Too separated by physical barriers Economic activities were too diverse to see any advantages Small colonies – union would be dominated by Canada French Canadian minority – religious and cultural rights would be lost Maritime colonies – trading system was directed East, towards Atlantic, not West Due to Geographic locale – developed strong loyalties that hindered progress toward union with central and western colonies
  13. British North america Canada’s birth as a country was unique Not achieved by war Nor revolution Each colony faced problems that it seemed unable to solve on its own Britain wanted to draw away USA rose in power The solution seemed to lie in a union Better able to deal with economic and political change
