  3. USAR Mission • Locate and rescue trapped victims • Assist other agencies – law, HazMat, medical – to access site • Recover deceased victims • Stabilize damaged structures - help speed recovery

  5. Engineers on USAR Teams USAR Engineers are - • Licensed Professional Engineers – 10+ years experience • Trained & certified for emergency work by USACE, FEMA, and NCEM • USAR Engineers serve on the front lines, on the pile, and in the hole

  6. Engineers at USAR Disasters Main Duty: Survival of the First Responders • Assess stability. Find best access routes. • Locate, size, & design emergency shoring. • Help direct crane work & heavy equipment ops • Monitor stability during rescue • On-site technical expert serving the Fire Chief or Incident Commander

  18. How to Deploy We need an engineer to help us with this disaster. How Much Will They Cost my Agency? Upon activation, NC USAR engineers become temporary employees of the State. They are insured for injury, liability, and Workman’s Comp. They cost $25.89/hour, portal-to-portal, and usually two are dispatched to a disaster scene.
