Materials and Equipment • Each piece of equipment that we use in a science class has a specific purpose. This equipment was designed to help us receive the best data and observations. • If we would use the wrong data then we are potentially putting ourselves in danger or messing up the results of the experiment
Glassware for Handling liquids • Erlenmeyer flask • Used to mix liquids, its narrow mouth prevents splashing and lessens the dispersion of noxious fumes. • Sometimes it is marked to make volume measurement, however these are approximate measurements.
Glassware for Handling Liquids • Test tubes • Are used to mix, measure, or heat liquids. • Test tubes are not usually marked with measurements, so they are used to make approximate measurements.
Glassware for Handling liquids • Beakers • Used to mix and heat liquids. Like and Erlenmeyer Flask, they are not intended for accurate measurement.
Glassware for Handling Liquids • Eye dropper • Used to dispense small measurements of liquids.
Equipment for heating • Bunsen burner • Source of gas heat.
Equipment for Heating • Hot plate • Source of electrical heat.
Equipment for Heating • Tongs • Used to grasp heated material
Tripod Holds glassware above a Bunsen burner Ring Stand Hold glassware above a Bunsen burner Equipment for Heating
Equipment for Heating • Wire Gauze • Usually goes on tripod or ring stand to gold the glassware being heated.
Equipment for Measuring Mass • Triple Beam balance • Used to determine the mass of heavier materials to the nearest gram.
Graduated Cylinder Are marked with a scale for measurement They are used to accurately measure liquid volume. Equipment for Measuring Volume
Pipets Used to measure small liquid volumes. Pipets are usually marked TD (to deliver). Is designed to deliver the exact volume marked on the side Equipment for Measuring Volume
Meter Stick Measures length and width Equipment for Measuring Length
Caliper Used to measure the thickness or diameter of an object on a smaller scale than a ruler. The jaws of the caliper are closed on the object to be measured, then the distance between the jaws are read. Works best on firm, solid objects Equipment for Measuring Length
Microscope Enables us to see things to small to see with the eye. 3 main components of the microscope are the arm, objectives, and the adjustment knobs. Observation Equipment
Watch Glass Holding container or covering device. Observation Equipment
Petri Dish Used to culture cells. Cell culture is a method of growing microscopic organisms. Have covers to enclose the cultured sample. Observation Equipment
