Galen was a Greek doctor, who studied in Egypt and returned to Greece in 157 where he was appointed physician to the gladiators. In AD 162 Galen went to Rome to become a doctor to the Emperor. He wrote over 300 medical books. Galen created the Theory of Opposites – treating ‘hot’ disease like fevers with cold baths and drinks, and a cold with chillies or heat.
