He started climbing mountains at the age of 10 • He graduated Berkeley High School in 1958 • Galen went to UC Berkeley to study Physics • He dropped out of college after four years to pursue his love for climbing
Later Life • Galen Rowell sold his automotive business in 1972 to become a photographer • He was never formally trained to become a photographer • Galen was known as a wilderness photographer and climber
After a year of being a photographer he completed his first major assignment for National Geographic Magazine.
Galen won the Ansel Adams reward for Conservation Photography in 1984 • He did several projects for Life, National Geographic, and Outdoor Photography magazines. • Galen also wrote about a variety of subjects such as photography, humanitarian, environmental issues, human visual cognition, and mountaineering.
Galen was considered a classic when it came to mountaineering • He served for organizations such as Committee of 100 Tibet and Worldwide Wildlife Fund • He took lots of nature and landscape photography • He published several magazine articles and 18 books in his lifetime.
Galen Rowell’s death • He died on August 11, 2002 • Galen Rowell passed away on a airplane accident with his wife Barbra.
