  1. Mining Owen G. Mikey Z. Nate M. Matt A.

  2. Mountaintop Removal Mining • Form of mining where the entire summit is removed • Including full coal seams • Take out usable coal • Redistribute unused soil onto the mountain in a similar contour as the original mountain to • Environmental Issues • Destruction of natural contour of the mountain • Pollution is a major problem • Dust and coal burning

  3. Quarry Mining • Type of open pit mining • Used for extracting building materials • Environmental Issues • Waste water discharge • Sedimentation problems (erosion) • Noise and air pollution

  4. Strip Mining • Process of removing surface materials over a long seam of wanted materials • Materials are extracted from the surface by some of the biggest machines on earth • Environmental Issues • Kills plant and animal life above and underground • Land never assumes original • Increases erosion

  5. Industries • Highlight benefits of mining • Extraction of: • Precious materials • Energy resources • Basically things we need to live our lifestyle • Benefits are greater than environmental risks

  6. Others • The basic consensus is that mining is necessary but only if it is done properly with minimal effect to environment

  7. Subsurface Mining • The process of extracting minerals that lie hundreds of feet underground • Drilling and the use of hot water pumps • Accessed by manned tunnels into the earth • Includes ventilation shafts • Less than environmental impact then all surface mining • Something tunnels collapse and form sink holes • Drilling and hot water pumps can cause pollution
