Gerunds as Subjects MODEL SENTENCES #4
What is the verb in each sentence below? • Swimming in the river can be dangerous. • Working with a tutor has helped me in math class. • Studying with my friends was not a good idea. • What is the subject in each of the sentences above? Remember, to find the subject, ask: Who or what “VERB”?
We often use gerunds or gerund phrases as subjects of sentences • Be careful with SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT! Gerunds are always singular. • Studying with my friends were was not a good idea. • Studying with my friend was not a good idea. • In both sentences, the subject is “studying,” NOT “friend” or “friends.”
Be careful! • An “ing” word at the beginning of a sentence can be a subject, or it can begin a participial phrase (see Model Sentences #1) • What are the subjects and verbs in these sentences: • Hiding in the forest can be dangerous. • Hiding in the forest, he felt scared and lonely. • Talking to his parents always helps him figure out what to do. • Talking to his parents, he realized that he needed to make some changes in his life.
With a partner, write sentences that use these gerunds as subjects. (These words are from Inside Reading, Units One and Two.) • Now write a sentence that uses one of these words to begin an introductory participial phrase.
