PROJECT INTEGRATE Integrating 21st Century Skills and Technology Into the Classroom Michelle PetersonBeth Nelson Kari Knutson
Working Together • Flandreau Elementary • Title I Reading • Special Education • Close Classrooms • RTI Reading Groups • Fluency Instruction • Similar PI Action Research Plan • Individualized vs. Group Instruction vs. Combination • What way works best?
Group Instruction • What? • Fluency Cards • Fluency Phrasing Activity • Laptops • Simultaneously • Pros • Work Independently • Increased Oral Reading Fluency • Cons • Monitoring Errors
Individualized Instruction • What? • Fluency Cards • Fluency Phrasing Activity • Smart! Board • One on One • Pros • Error Correction • Increased Oral Reading Fluency • Cons • Time Consuming
Combination • What? • Fluency Cards • Fluency Phrasing Activity • Smart! Board • Group • Pros • Hear Each Other/Cooperative Learning • Increased Oral Reading Fluency • Cons • Relying on Each Other
What We Learned • More significant increase in group instruction than in individual instruction. • Either way, the students enjoyed working with the technology and enjoyed trying to “beat” their previous scores. Group Individual Combination +37 +21 +12
Questions • Was the increase in fluency because we were using phrasing or because we were using technology? • How would this work in large group settings? • Any Questions?
