Standards Based Instruction • 2.1 Write fictional, autobiographical, or biographical narratives: • Narrate a sequence of events and communicate their significance to the audience. • Locate scenes and incidents in specific places. • Describe with concrete sensory details the sights, sounds, and smells of a scene and the specific actions, movements, gestures, and feelings of the characters; use interior monologue to depict the characters' feelings. • Pace the presentation of actions to accommodate temporal, spatial, and dramatic mood changes. • Make effective use of descriptions of appearance, images, shifting perspectives, and sensory details.

  3. SWBAT • Recall all the topics covered so far in the class • Write good fiction.

  4. Conflict / Plot • Protagonist wants something • Something prevents them from having what they want, or takes away what they want. • They try to get what they want, but there are obstacles. • Either they get what they want, or they stop wanting it.

  5. Narrative Voice • 1st person narration: • Protagonist themselves talk about the story, giving commentary that enriches readers’ understanding. • Gives very personal details, including own thoughts and memories. • 3rd person narration: • A voice outside of the story itself narrates what is happening. • Talks about things nobody in the story could know, and knows the thoughts of every character.

  6. Dialogue • No “ping pong” dialogue • Action tags interspersed in dialogue • Internal monologue interspersed in dialogue • Characters speak and react like real people • Avoid adverbs to describe the way people talk

  7. Scenery • Described at the beginning of each scene • Appeals to multiple senses • Vivid detail; includes adjectives

  8. Literary Elements • Symbol • Personification • Metaphor • Foreshadowing • Analogy

  9. Paragraph Structure • Lots of little paragraphs is ideal • Group series of actions together, and group all parts of a description together. • Other than that, you should probably divide everything into shorter paragraphs.
