Welcome to Band! Tonight is the first step in an exciting journey for you and your student! In a few short weeks you will be hearing some interesting noises in your homes, but stick with it, you’ll be amazed at what your students accomplish in a short amount of time.
Why Join Band?? • Students can increase their attention span, fine motor skills, and memorization skills. • 96% of principals agree that music education motivates and encourages students to stay in school. • Music students receive more academic honors and awards than non-music students.
Positive Social Aspects of Band • Parents of high school band students will tell you that most band students are the kids you want your child to be friends with. • The friends you make in fifth grade band carry through high school…and/or college!!! 2013 2008
What should a Band Parent expect?? • Students will get to experience some really great things through practices, performance, competition, community, and growth. • In 7th & 8th Grade your child will be able to participate various state-wide musical events. • Also, students will have the opportunity to play with the high school during their field shows, pep-band, and concert band.
Band can help your student’s GPA!! • See specific information in the Band Handbook • General Band rehearses Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30 AM • Thursday group lessons • Performances
How do I help my child pick an instrument? • Consider his/her interests. • Students will almost (but not always) be most successful on the instruments they are most interested. • Consider what your child wants to do in music in the future. • Does he/she want to join jazz band? Does he/she want to switch to a different instrument in the future? This may play a factor in what instrument you start on. • Refer to the parent letter sent home. What was recommended to your child?
Instrument Quality • Beware of a deal that seems “too good to be true” • Investing in an instrument is like investing in a car - you get what you pay for. Especially beware of buying instruments from big box stores - they are shelved in the toy department for a reason. Avoid multi-colored instruments and stick to the gold, black, and silver instruments. • Be careful buying your instruments on the internet or at stores that also sell groceries! • There is no guarantee that the instrument is in the condition they say it is. If an instrument is in poor condition it can cost hundreds of dollars to get it in working condition. Or it may be unfixable all together.
Recommended Brands • FLUTES • Armstrong • Artley • Selmer • Yamaha • CLARINET • Armstrong • Buffet • Conn • Slemer • Vito/LeBlanc • Yamaha • TRUMPET/TROMBONE • Bach • Besson • Conn Getzen • King • Yamaha • PERCUSSION • Ludwig • Pearl • Vic Firth • Yamaha
Investing in a quality instrument is vital to your student's success. If they get started on an instrument that doesn’t work well or holds them back in any way, they will get very frustrated and probably quit. Set your student up for success and get a good quality instrument.
