  3. Purpose for Meeting • Benefits of band. • Myths about band. • Necessary Instrument Equipment. • Grading: Academic/Conduct. • How to obtain an instrument.

  4. Benefits of Band • The greatest thing is the relationships each student will develop over the years. • Talents and Confidence. • Gives children confidence and a reason for coming to/staying in school • Ability to play an instrument and learn about music through it. • Dedication to work hard to do their best and the rewards that come with it • Participate with other great kids. • Learn responsibility, respect, commitment.

  5. Values Taught In Band • Respect is the #1 word in this room • I ask students to show respect with their eyes, words, and actions • Respect facilities, others, and materials • Team Work: It takes everyone working together to make a product

  6. Success is an investment • Practice at home • Homework just like any class • Building a skill • Private Lessons • Support with fundraisers and time • Stay involved with your child • Hear them practice! • Be encouraging • Have boundaries and rewards

  7. Parents/Siblings • Please be cautious about your comments to them while they are learning. They are not professionals. An encouraging atmosphere is the best place to learn. • Please be patient. • Please make sure they are doing their homework just as any other class. • Please encourage them. • Please attend their concerts. • Have them teach you or someone in the family to play. • Please have them play for you regularly. • Please check and make sure they are taking care of the investment.

  8. We would like to remind you… • Be active! • Attend concerts and volunteer for some small task. • Help your kids be prepared each day for class and public performances. • Check their instruments and inspect your investment regularly.

  10. Homework for other classes • Please check on your child’s homework in all classes. • If they get behind in another class, they are pulled from band to go to grade recovery. • Then they are behind in band (sometimes results in a bad grade in band).

  11. Why We are Here • We are here to encourage. • We are here to draw out of your child their hidden abilities. • We are here to challenge the students. • To develop the best individual and group dynamic possible for them.

Band Boosters • Band is unique in that we depend on (and am also very thankful for) highly involved parents • We participate in various activities on and off campus • Always looking to improve and grow our program • Parents pave the path for our future • Band Board Members • Need fresh hands to help

Band Ziti Dinner • Music purchases, events, transportation, uniforms, instrument repairs and purchases… they all add up • To keep providing opportunities to our students, the Boosters are holding its first Baked Ziti Dinner • November 21, 4pm, GLMS cafeteria • More info will come, but would like to start making plans now • Please sign up if you can

  18. Myths about Band • Band takes up a lot of time – Wrong. • Girls play flute, guys play drums – Wrong. • Band is an elective and you don’t have to work at it – Wrong.

  19. How we chose the instrument • We want everyone on the right instrument • Instrument chooses the player • Two weeks of fitting • Also based on need of band

Necessary Equipment • All students must have an instrument by Monday. • Rent to own a new or used instrument. • Purchase a used instrument. • School Rentals are limited. • Keep in mind: Nothing is free and good things are worth working for. The benefits your child will get will far out-weigh any expenses that are invested. • The opportunity to prove to you that they can take care of something of value is priceless.

  23. Combination Lock for school locker • Keep locked at ALL TIMES! • If lost or stolen, student must replace as soon as possible

  25. PENCILS! • Pencils in their case • Pencils in their music binder • Pencils in their locker • Pencils in their pocket • They cannot have too many pencils!

Music • Later in the year, we will be learning sheets music for our concerts (not from the book) • To save the school printing costs, please visit our site to print your child’s music • Students will get password to gain access • Email’s will be sent as a reminder thru Skyward and our Email List (from survey) • Website: GLMSBand.wordpress.com

  27. Highly Suggested Item • Pencil bag to place in binder/locker for accessories (pencils, cleaning supplies, extra reeds, etc).

  28. Flute • Silver polishing rag • Cleaning rod, rag, and swab

  29. Clarinet/Saxes • Three (3) 2.5 (medium) reeds • Replace reeds every two weeks (or sooner) • Please! It’s for your own good and health! • Start with small pack of cheaper reeds. When they run out, it will be time for Vandoren or Mitchel Laurie • Example of cheaper, low quality reed pack to start with (Left). Higher quality to continue with (Starting no later than November) (Right)

  30. Clarinet/Sax Continued • Reed strength (2.5, 3, 3.5) will depend on playing development. Some students will be asked to move sooner than others. Usually by January, all beginners are playing on strength 3 reeds. • Cleaning swab, reed case, cork grease (can buy as kit). You can buy more accessories if you wish (mouthpiece cleaner, thumb rest, etc)

  31. Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba • Cleaning rag (to polish and keep clean), valve oil, mouthpiece brush, slide grease, cleaning snake. Trombones also need trombone slide cream.

  33. Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba Mouthpiece • Trombone/Euphonium: Bach 6 ½ AL Mouthpiece (Small Shank) • Tuba: 18 or 18AM Mouthpiece Bach or Helleberg

  34. Percussion • *Suggested: Stick Bag* Students will add to this bag the longer they play. • Alfred’s Drum Method book 1 and AOA Book 1, Combined Percussion. • Pair of 5b drum sticks – wood or plastic tips. • Snare and Bell Kit.

  35. Cleaning • Make it a routine to clean instruments regularly to avoid damage to instrument and sickness. • Instruments need regular maintenance like cars need. Cheaper in the long run! • Local music teachers, stores, and YouTube are good resources to learn detailed proper cleaning.

  36. Purchasing an instrument • Best way is rent-to own. • Little money invested at once. • Insurance policy is automatic. • Quality instruments in working condition. • Used instruments • Please have them checked out by store. • Make sure they are in good working condition. • Ask value of instrument vs. repairs and asking price.

  38. Renting From The School • Instruments are limited and do NOT come with an insurance policy • $125 for year and must fill out paperwork • See Ms. Kinion at end of meeting to get on list • Tuba players: Will rent from the school, but must buy their own mouthpiece
