  2. Bathing a Baby • Anytime is fine, except after feeding • Sponge bath for 2 weeks, afterwards a tub bath is fine

  3. Bathing a Baby – Sponge Baths Supplies needed: • Two soft bath towels • A soft washcloth • A diaper • Mild soap • Baby shampoo

  4. Bathing a Baby – Sponge Baths • 1 soft towel over work area • Put bathwater in basin – test temp (lukewarm) • Place infant on towel, lay another towel on top of baby’s body

  5. Bathing a Baby – Sponge Baths • Begin by washing baby’s face with clear water and pat dry • Wash rest of baby’s body with soap and water • Wash scalp with baby shampoo once or twice a week

  6. Bathing a Baby – Sponge Baths • Sometimes, baby may develop cradle cap – apply baby oil to scalp • Baby powder or lotion may be applied after bath – rub powder on your skin first, then apply

  7. Tub Baths • Tub may be a large dishpan or special baby bathtub. 6th or 7th month, use regular tub • Place rubber mat or towel in the bottom of tub and add lukewarm water (2-3 in)

  8. Dressing a Baby • Consider temperature • Newborn dressing: minimal dressing needs! • Some may choose to dress in a sleeper or cotton undershirt and gown • Socks and booties not necessary

  9. Dressing Older Babies • Overalls with snapping buttons are preferable • Pants with padded knees for active crawlers

  10. Dressing Older Babies • Soft cotton knit shirts and sleepers • Shoes not necessary til baby walks outdoors

  11. Choosing Clothes • Knit fibers – ease of movement • Flame retardant • Best to buy nothing smaller than a 6-month size for a newborn! • Clothing is expensive – look for clothes with hems and extra buttons
