Social Security • What does it do? • Employers and Employees pay a tax that funds their pensions, or retirement incomes • Examples: • Social Security Act
Federal Work Programs • What do they do? • It helped put people back to work. • They helped build highways, repair bridges, build parks and public buildings, such as schools, libraries, and post offices. • Examples: • Works Progress Administration (WPA) • Public Works Administration (PWA)
Environmental Improvement Programs • What do they do? • It helped put people back to work. • They worked to build wildlife preserves, plant trees, maintain forest roads and trails, and build lookout towers to prevent forest fires • Examples: • Emergency Conservation Bill • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Farm Assistance Programs • What do they do? • The government offered payments to farmers if they did not grow certain crops. This prevented a surplus of crops. • The TVA worked to clear rivers to allow farmers to ship their products and they built dams to prevent flooding and provide hydroelectric power. • The government worked to provide electricity to rural areas of the country.
Examples: • Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) • Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) • Rural Electrification Administration (REA)
Increased Labor Rights • What do they do? • Labor unions were formed to help people protect their jobs once they were employed. • A minimum wage and maximum number of hours a person could work was established. • It became illegal for kids under 16 to work. • Examples: • Fair Labor Standards Act
