  3. Why PEARL? • Watch-dog program for ENERGY STAR lighting products • CFLs • Fixtures • Concerns over product quality • Premature failure • Not bright enough • Gets much dimmer over time • Slow to reach full light output • No industry-wide QA mechanism or challenge program exists

  5. What has PEARL done? • Program started 2000 • Completed six cycles (sets) of testing • Tested • 123 CFL models from 22 manufacturers • 53 Fixture models from 19 manufacturers • Currently receiving products for Cycle 7 • Testing • 30 CFL models from 15 manufacturers

  6. What’s on the Market? • Product selection • Based on what is available; • Retail • Electrical distributors • Lighting show rooms • Some internet • Shopping list is then cross referenced with ENERGY STAR website • Products are then purchased from sponsor locations

PEARL • ENERGY STAR is currently working with its partners to develop a self-sustaining watch-dog program that will be funded by the manufacturers • US Environmental Protection Agency is working with the fixture manufacturers • US Department of Energy is working with the CFL manufacturers • It is expected that these programs will be in place when PEARL Cycle 7 is complete

Conclusions • Products have been improving over time • PEARL has continually expanded its coverage of products and amount of testing • Only been able to touch a very small percentage of the products on the market • 5.6% for CFLs & 0.8% for fixtures • Not easy to find some products • Watchdog program plays an important role
