TEIN Initiative: Origin • 1H2000: Initiative of TEIN Raised • President KIM DJ proposed the TEIN Project during his visit to European Countries (Mar-May 2000) • 3Q2000: TEIN Initiative Supported from Both Regions • EC expressed support for the Project at the 15th Korea-EU MM (July) • NRENs of Europe stated support for the project (July) • 4Q2000: TEIN Initiative Endorsed at ASEM III (Oct.) • emphasized the need to establish and expand information and research networks among ASEM members

TEIN Initiative Objectives of TEIN are to: • contribute to enhancing exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe through increased and more effective information flows; • enhance and diversify research exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe; • expand and diversify speedier and more powerful telecommunication connections between Asia and Europe (ASEM-III)

  8. TEIN-History (2000-2003) • 4Q2000: • ASEM Summit endorsed TEIN Initiative • 4Q2001 • TEIN Link opened (KR-FR) & soon upgraded • 3Q2003 • EC announced TEIN2 Action • Support ASEM-Asia LDCs (direct beneficiaries)

  9. EU’s action for TEIN2 (2003.09.) • EU Commissioner Erriki Liikanen announced TEIN2 Plan (10 Mil. euro) for ASEM-Asia LDCs (Sep 2003, Seoul) • Relation & Cooperation b/w TEIN and TEIN2 • To strengthen BDD as well as Research Cooperation in Asia
