  2. Today’s lesson is… Writing a Series of Paragraphs Expressing an Opinion a.k.a. “The Essay”

  3. Step 1 – Decide whether you agree or disagree with the topic question / statement Is it a good idea for high school students to have a part-time job?

  4. Step 2 - Turn the question into a statement. Example: Is it a good idea for high school students to have a part-time job? Becomes: I believe it is important for every high school student to have a part-time job.

  5. Step 3 – Brainstorm by designing a web Statement Why? (Big Topic) Why? (Big Topic) Why? (Big Topic) Example #1 Example #1 Example #1 Example #2 Example #2 Example #2 Example #3 Example #3 Example #3

  6. Step 3 – Brainstorm by designing a web It is a positive experience for a high school student to have a part-time job. Earning extra money Gaining work experience Being responsible Reference on a resumé Having a social life Learning important lessons Being committed to work Getting a future job Doing activities Not needing parents Developing skills Buying clothes

  7. Step 4 – Turn your web into paragraphs Introduction – Be sure to indent 1 2 3 Notice that the three topics from the web are mentioned right in the introduction.

  8. Body Paragraph #1 – Indent again

  9. Body Paragraph #2 – Indent again

  10. Body Paragraph #3 – Indent again

  11. Conclusion – Be sure to indent Note that your conclusion would not need to be this long, but try to re-state your main statement.

  12. Note that there are 3 clear topics outlined in the introduction.

  13. There are some introductory, general sentences followed by 3 clear topics for the body paragraphs.
