But Why? • The design of a product, environment, or service that is flexible and meets the needs of a wide range of users can eliminate or minimize the need for specific accommodations for a person with a disability. Universal Design!! • A mismatch between the individual with a disability and product, the environment, attitudes, or society can create or exacerbate barriers.

Legal Considerations • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 • Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (EIT) • Oklahoma’s Electronic and Information Technology Act (EITA) • Americans with Disabilities Act and Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG)
Disability Definition • Has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of such person’s major life activities • Major life activities??? • Has a record of such impairment • Is regarded as having such impairment
Student’s Registration Process • Apply to UCO • Once accepted, enroll in courses • Meet with DS Provider (initial intake) • Accommodation Letters issued to student • Services are established (i.e. interpreters/CART & alternative textbooks) • Students deliver ACC LTR to professor and discuss and make arrangements for accommodations
FAQ’s • How do I know a student has accommodations in place? • Who determines accommodations? • I have a student struggling in my class. What should I do to help the student? How can I refer a student to DSS? • When do accommodations start? • Do I have any recourse if I disagree about requested accommodations?
