Mendler’s Background • Born Oct. 21, 1949 in Middle Village, Queens New York • Bachelor’s degree in psychology and education from Queen’s University. Master’s degree in psychology from Alfred university, and his doctrine from Union Graduate School. • He works with children of all ages. Especially those with disabilities. • He has seminars and trainings to teach others his methods. • He has written several books such as Motivating Students Who Don’t Care. 2. "Allen Mendler"
Behavior Management Methods • Mendler and Curwin focused on the long-term. • allow for the students to be able to resolve their issues they have instead of ignoring them. • motivates students to be responsible and fair. • control anger, and prevent uproars. • develop a plan.
3-Dimensional Discipline Approach • Prevention: What can be done to minimize problems. • Action: What is to be done once problems occur. • Resolution: What can be done for the chronic misbehaver. 3. (Fitzer)
Discipline with Dignity The program helps build school/classroom management that focus’s on the children learning critical thinking habits, respect, and cooperation with other students. • This method helps teachers/faculty to have more time focusing on student instruction and less time dealing with behavioral issues. • It gives the child a sense of self-esteem and helps them have the ability to make the right choices in and out of the classroom. 2.

12 steps to successfully use discipline and dignity in the classroom • Let the students know what you expect • Provide instruction at levels that match student ability • Be able to identify with your students • Use humor • Mix up the activities and teaching style • Refuse to accept excuses • Offer choices • Legitimize behavior that you cannot stop • Use hugs and touching to communicate with kids of all ages • Be responsible for yourself and allow kids to take responsibility for themselves • Realize and accept that you cannot reach every kid • Start fresh everyday 4.
