VOCAB • Purine= Adenine/ Guanine • Pyrimidine= Thymine/ Cytosine/ Uracil • transformation= transer of virulence from one cell to another • DNA Polymerase= enzyme that synthesizes DNA from a preexisting template-synthesizes 5-3 and requires a primer • Semiconservative replication= replicated in a way that each strand serves as a template for construction of a new complementary strand
Vocab part 2 • Helicase- use ATP to unwind DNA • Okazaki fragment- short segment of DNA produced by discontinuous replication in the 5 to 3 direction away from the replication
Structure • The three dimensional structure of the DNA molecule contains three main components: • 1) Five-carbon sugar • 2) Phosphate group • 3) Nitrogenous Base The phosphate group is linked to the two sugars by phophodiester bonds.
DNA replication • Requires 3 things • 1) template • 2) Nucleotides • 3) polymerase enzyme • Enzyme “Helicase” is used to first unwind the DNA strand • DNA polymerase reads DNA and then synthesizes a complementary strand
