  2. I. The fruits of drinking. • Proverbs 23:29-30 “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed drink.”

  3. I. The fruits of drinking. • A. Sorrowful thought and complaint. Exhausted purse; neglected work; anticipated reproaches; diminishing strength (Delitzsch) • B. Wounds, not from necessity or duty, in payment for nothing done or to receive

  4. I. The fruits of drinking. • C. Darkening of the eyes–clouding • D. Above for those who tarry late at wine and enter wine houses to test mixing of wine to water

  5. II. An attractive beginning with a tragic end. • A. Proverbs 23:31 “Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly.” (Attractive sight and taste) • B. Proverbs 23:32 “At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like a viper.” • Serpent poison rots flesh • Viper poison destroys nervous system

  6. II. An attractive beginning with a tragic end. • C. Proverbs 23:33 Sees strange things–abnormal, bizarre, mad, dreadful (delirium tremens). Says things which would be ashamed of if not drunk. • D. Proverbs 23:34 Like drowned man. Unconscious. On mast in danger of being thrown off and hurt any minute • E. Proverbs 23:35 Does not feel beatings because insensible. Long sleep. Despite all raise up to drink again.

  7. III. Yields Poverty Here and Hereafter. • A. Proverbs 23:19 “Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way.” • (The way of the righteous is to avoid things like drinking and gluttonous parties.)

Proverbs 23:20-21 “Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.” • Avoid drinking, gluttonous party goers. Leads to lethargy, long sleeping, job loss, poverty and rags

  9. III. Yields Poverty Here and Hereafter. • C. Proverbs 21:17 “He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.” • D. Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
