Outcome 3 Care settings vary in size, shape and function and the care users within them may be young or old, but they all share one thing in common: they contain hazards. You are required to write about hazards and risks in a care setting of your choice.
Outcome 3 Hazards in care settings Hazards are all around you, but carefully managed they will do no harm. A safety audit in your chosen care setting will identify hazards and their associate risks and show how risks can be minimised.
Outcome 3 Health and safety legislation is designed to protect staff,service users and their visitors. To successfully complete this unit you must show that you understand how health and safety legislation is used in your chosen care setting and to do this you should research some of the following health and safety acts. • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 • RIDDOR 1995 • COSHH 2002
Outcome 3 Employer’s Duties Employers must ensure that their employees know about the following: • Carrying out the job without risk and in a safe way • Any risks that may affect the employee • How risks have been minimised • How to get first aid treatment • Action to be taken in an emergency. Employers must provide the following free of charge: • Protective clothing and equipment • Safety training.
Outcome 3 Employee’s duties Employees must: • protect themselves as much as possible • use equipment provided for its intended purpose • carry out tasks with proper training in a safe manner • report any safety hazards • co-operate with employers on safety issues • inform someone if an accident occurs.
