Why Peer Coaching? Partners in Learning • What we were doing wasn’t working • Teachers look first to peers for help • Research demonstrates peer coaching is effective
Coaching is not a new idea… Almost every teacher feels like they have coached another teacher at some point in his/her career.
Peer Coaching Programme Goals Partners in Learning Train coaches to help other teachers: Plan and implement instructional activities that integrate technology into a standards-based curriculum. Plan and implement a Peer Coaching programme that aligns with their school’s improvement plan. Use communication skills to promote discussion about instruction. Collaborate with their school’s leadership and colleagues to ensure that coaching is part of their school’s professional development plan.
Peer Coaching Around the World Partners in Learning • Peer Coaching is running through Partners in Learning in 43 countries around the world. • Examples of Success: • Canada: Government in Manitoba recognises the success of PC and uses it to help with province-wide literacy with ICT programme • Australia: PC is adopted by teacher training institute as part of Masters programme for teachers • US: In one Washington district serving 20k students, 80 coaches work with 1200 teachers to improve lesson design, integrating ICT
