4. As UNHCR had no access to the area, the first dispatch of the relief items was assisted by local authorities. The security of delivery (hygienic and food items worth 40,000 USD) was assured by local and regional government (transport and security). 4

5. On June 14 and 18, following request of local authorities UNHCR in cooperation with Kharkov Governor delivered humanitarian assistance to the city of Sviatohirsk in Donetsk region, where there were some 15,000 IDPs in need.

6. On June 18, UNHCR delivered the second humanitarian assistance to Sviatohirsk and monitored the distribution process. Distribution to 7 categories of vulnerable IDPs reached estimated 5,000 IDPs

8. Delivery to Krasniy Lyman Donetsk region 9 July 2014 The 12 mt delivery was provided at request of Donetsk Governor Mr. Tarutato assist some 5,200 displaced persons in Krasniy Lyman.

10. 12 metric tons of food and hygiene items were shipped by UNHCR jointly with Donetsk regional authorities to displaced persons in the town of Krasnyi Lyman in Donetsk region.

12. Local volunteers sort humanitarian aid in the cellar of the Slovyanskpublic library. This “warehouse” is provided by local government and allows UNHCR to store, sort and distribute aid in a targeted manner.

13. Artema street in the outskirts of Slovyansk, Donetsk region, is one of the most affected in the city with most of the houses been hit by artillery. Valery (pictured), is more optimistic than most of his neighbours, though his house was obliterated while he was taking refuge in Sviatohirsk. The debris in an around the house has now been cleaned and he is looking into options to rebuild the house. Hygiene and kitchen items are delivered to many who lost all belongings.

14. An elderly returnee to Slovyanskis comforted by her daughter in law. The family resides on Artema street, one of the most affected in the city. They benefited from personal hygiene and kitchen products upon their arrival on 19 July.

15. Elena is standing in her family’s house on Artema street in Slovyansk, holding two bags of aid delivered to her, with the help of local volunteers (19 July). When her house was hit by a shell in early July, Elena and her husband were staying in a temporary accommodation in nearby Sviatohirsk.

16. On 2 August 2014, UNHCR together with Donetsk Deputy Governor delivered humanitarian aid to Pershotravneviy district of Donetsk region, where more than 5,000 persons, displaced by the conflict, found a refuge. This number included 1,800 children, who suffer most from the displacement.

17. Humanitarian aid for Golubok children camp On July 31, UNHCR delivered matrasses, pillows, bed linens and blankets to improve the living conditions of 100 children who were suffering from enurusis.

18. UNHCR delivered humanitarian aid to Sviatogirsk On 31 July, UNHCR delivered humanitarian assistance to Sviatohirsk, which included personal hygienic items for different age and gender categories of vulnerable IDPs. This included pampers, cleaning gloves, washing powder, soap, dish washing liquid, tooth paste, waste bags, napkins, shampoo, toothbrush, washing basins.

19. Humanitarian assistance for the South of Donetsk region

20. On August 8 UNHCR Regional Representative and Head of Ukraine’ State Emergency Service SergiyBochkovskiy concluded an agreement of cooperation in delivering relief items to internally displaced persons in Ukraine.

21. The flight was accompanied by Ukrainian singer and civic activist RuslanaLyzhychko, Ambassador of Switzerland Christian Schoenenberger, Ambassador of Sweden Andreas von Beckerath, UNICEF, WHO and OCHA.

23. Cooperation with Red Cross On 3 August UNHCR delivered food and NFI items to KharkivRed Cross for further distribution. The assistance included different types of food items, kitchen sets, blankets, bed linens and personal hygienic items and will be distributed to the most vulnerable families among the 23,000 registered by state emergency service department for Kharkov city and oblast.

24. ASSISTANCE IN KYIV REGION UNHCR delivered matrasses, bed linen, household and kitchen application to improve reception conditions 3 collective centres in Kyiv region, hosting some 250 IDPs

25. Local church in the village of Kotsiubinske, Kyiv region, has approached UNHCR with a request for assistance to increase reception capacities of the church-managed collective center up to 450 persons. UNHCR has agreed to cover identified needs

26. UNHCR assessment visits in Donetsk region Roman, Alina, the six year-old Margarita and her sister left their home in Kramatorsk in late June. Roman says they decided to run ‘because the shooting would not stop and 15 people a day were dying’. They plan to return to Kramatorsk as soon as the public services are restored. Liubov, 70, has a disability and shares a room with her disabled son while her son (Troyanda Sanatorium in Sviatohirsk, Donetsk region). Fighting in Slovyansk continued for few days, and when her windows were broken, she decided to leave. 26

27. Viktoriyaand her two year-old son arrived at the Golubok children’s camp in Sviatohirskfrom Donetsk. ‘Even my son said they are shooting’, she recalls with a tear in her eye. She is planning to return, but not before there is no risk for her son to see weapons.

29. Cyclists pass a residential building hit by artillery in the village of Semenivkaon the outskirts of Slovyansk (Donetsk region). Over the weeks of the city’s siege, over half of its population left their homes, most of them finding refuge in the nearby Sviatohirskand in the Kharkiv region.

30. Mariya, 80, stands where her summer kitchen used to be. She and her husband are living in the Artema suburb of Slovyansk(Donetsk region). Their house was hit by artillery on 13 June. They are now sleeping in the kitchen: the only part of the house left intact by the attack. Their children, also Slovyanskresidents, are helping them with the basic necessities. Yet they do not know if and how they will get a roof and windows back on their house; their $100-pension has not been paid for three months. 31. Nikolai, 62, stands in his living room in the Chernievka district of Slovyansk, Donetsk region. He and his wife, Lidia, were waken on a clear, early July night by an artillery projectile landing in their garden. The next day, they went back to find the house obliterated, with the roof fallen and everything destroyed inside.

As government forces re-established control in the city in the first days of July, IDPs – numbering some 70 thousand – started returning. Many not only found the city’s infrastructure and services ailing, with only sporadic power and water supply, but also their houses destroyed in the weeks of the siege.
