  4. DIRECT USE In Oregon today • 2195 identified resources • 630 Applications • 594 x 109 Btu per year energy Source: OIT Geo-Heat Center

  5. DIRECT USE ♦ Hot spring water piped to • pools, buildings, greenhouses. ♦ Wells in Klamath Falls Oregon supply hospital, schools, OIT, downtown business core, brewpub, and funeral parlor. ♦ Every Western state has a similar community: Boise, Reno, Las Cruces, etc

  6. DRILLING “Classic” drill rig in Klamath Falls. Very much a water well rig.

  7. Newberry Well 55-29 Completed in July at a depth of 10,060 feet. No significant quantities of water or steam

  14. U.S. Geothermal • Exploration surveys in 2007 • Well drilling in 2008 & 2009: • NHS-1 is 2300 feet deep & 277º F temp; NHS-5 is 2800‘ & 286º F • Idaho Power to purchase power & build transmission line • $106 M project ~26 MW Source: www.usgeothermal.com

  15. CRUMP GEYSER • Warner Valley • South central Oregon • 50km (30mi) east of Lakeview

  16. Nevada Geothermal • Estimates of 40 – 60 MW at Crump • NGP completed some passive exploration • NGP working on selecting drilling locations, permitting and project feasibility studies. Source: www.nevadageothermal.com

  17. Davenport Power • Davenport Power is Project Operator for Northwest Geothermal Co. • 20-year contract with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in 2006 • 60 to 120 MW of power • Drilling preparation & environmental work began in 2006 Source: www.davenportpower.com

  18. Davenport Power • Newberry Well 55-9 drilled in 2008 to 10,060 feet. • No significant quantities of water or steam • Exploration Well #2 drilled to a depth of about 4,700 feet • July 2008 submitted a “Notice of Intent” to apply for a Site Certificate • A separate federal Environmental Impact Statement process on hold

  19. Klamath Falls • OIT uses (3) 192º F wells to heat the campus • Now has a 200 kW power plant starting up • Proposing a 1.2 MW power plant to meet all campus power needs • South of town a separate 10 MW proposal

  20. Innovation • This type of modular power generation unit can make power from low-temperature (165° F) geothermal resources.

  21. ENVIRONMENT • Public lands follow National Environmental Policy Act => Environmental Assessment or an Environmental Impact Statement • Private and public lands follow local and state permits.

  22. ENVIRONMENT • State well drilling permits • State air & water quality permits • State power plant license • County building permits
