  2. Purpose • Convince you of the value of all those “other” activities that don’t show up on your degree plan list of courses • Alert you to some of the best professional development activities available • Suggest how to find these activities

  3. WHY should you seek out this “other” education? • You learn more! maximize the value of your A&M education • These activities “set you apart” from the average student, especially leadership and research experience • You will meet many more students/faculty in your program and across the university: larger social network and a richer experience while here

  4. Expand your Scholarship • Attending conferences: local, regional &/or national • Volunteer early and often to assist in research activities of faculty & other grad students • Convert classroom projects/papers to “real-life” outcomes (published white papers, community-based projects)

  5. Expand your Skill Set • Training in teaching skills (CTE): Graduate Teaching Academy,CIRTL (STEM students) • Leadership development • Workshops • Volunteer, run for office in student organizations • Improve your writing skills/habits • University Writing Center • POWER (now open to all students)

  6. Expand your Opportunities • Present your scholarship at regional or national meetings/performances -- Funding often available when you are presenting author ( OGS Research & Presentation Grants, Grad Student Council Travel Awards) JasjeetKaur–Dept of Bio/Ag Eng--Outstanding Grad Student Poster, 2012 Student Water Research Conference, Oklahoma State Univ • Sharpen your resume/CV& interview skills, connect with potential employers • TAMU Career Center ( KoldusBldg)-- find their • Graduate Student counselor

  7. How to find these“other education” opportunities?? • Ask your advisor about conferences, professional societies (& student chapters) • Google it! Search websites of professional societies relevant to your discipline for meetings/competitions/scholarships • Ask your program’s most successful students • Keep checking websites: OGS/CTE/Career Center
